Rockies Trevor Story hits 505-foot home run, the longest in Coors Field history

At the end of the 2018 season, Story was first in the NL in power-speed number (31.2) and had a .276 BA, with 42 doubles , 37 home runs , 168 strikeouts , 108 RBIs , and 27 stolen bases . On September 5, Story hit three home runs, the second of which was initially measured at 505 feet , but was later measured at 487 feet . Story's 518-foot blast and Juan Soto's 520-foot home run beat the previous Derby record held by Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge.

Story hit 20 home runs in the first round to beat Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo's 19. He leads the NFL in completion percentage (71.8%) and is second in passer rating (111.7) and has thrown for 1,362 yards and 10 touchdowns over that span. His last pass in October was intercepted, but since then he has thrown 181 consecutive passes without an interception, which is the second-longest streak in franchise history .

I asked Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story about the unusual swing that led to a massive home run.

Playing at high-elevation Coors Field definitely helps, but Story’s also an impressive hitter with a lot of power. Story now has 31 home runs, tied with Nolan Arenado for most on the Rockies this season. Voters have always struggled with how to debit hitters for the Coors factor, a problem that has stifled Larry Walker and Todd Helton's Hall of Fame candidacies. As such, Story will be doing well if he finishes in the top-10 of MVP voting.

The pitch from San Francisco left-hander Andrew Suarez traveled an estimated 459 feet, landed on the concourse beyond left field and ended up in the parking lot. On September 5, 2018, Story etched himself even deeper into Coors Field lore by hitting three home runs in four at-bats in a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. At the time, the three homers combined to travel 1,380 feet, which included a 505-foot home run. When first measured by Statcast, the blast was considered the longest homer in Coors Field history. However, it has since been recalculated by Statcast to be a 487-foot shot, now tied for the third-longest in Coors Field history. On March 23, 2022, Story signed a six-year, $140 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.

Justin Jefferson closing in on NFL record

"The linebacker on the edge stepped down one or two steps and really felt like I could have just outran him to the goal line," Lawrence said. "Luckily got the stiff-arm. He recovered a little better than I thought he would. It's one of those days where we made those plays, and good teams do that. And I think that's where we're heading, and it's exciting." Was one of my guys growing up, and that was definitely his thing.

The ball bounced on the left-center concourse and knocked into the top of the Helton Burger concession stand behind the bleachers. It was his fifth multihomer game of the season, his second in three days and the 10th in his career. Rockies shortstop Trevor Story had quite a night on Wednesday against the Giants, hitting three homers in three at-bats. His first dinger went a monster 459 feet in the bottom of the first, but his second sailed for 505 feet, the longest home run recorded in the Statcast era. In his first at-bat in Wednesday night’s game at Coors Field, Rockies all-star shortstop Trevor Story swung so hard he lost his balance and fell on his backside.

As Marlins manager in 2014, Redmond threw to then-Miami slugger Giancarlo Stanton at the Home Run Derby in Minneapolis, where Redmond spent much of his playing career. Rockies right-handed pitcher Germán Márquez -- the only Rockies player who will suit up for Tuesday night’s Midsummer Classic -- assisted Story with towels and drinks. Also, former Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado -- wearing his Cardinals red cap but still occupying hearts of Rockies fans -- served not just as co-cornerman, but as hype man by waving a towel to whip the crowd into a frenzy. Even more special than the swings that sent balls skyward were the other moments.

And still Story was not finished, in the sixth, he slammed a 416 foot home run off Suarez, marking the 17th time a Rockies player has hit three home runs in a game. In the fourth inning, Story stayed on his feet and drove the ball 505 feet to left off Suazez, making it the longest home run in Coors Field history, surpassing the 504-foot blast by Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton on Aug. 6, 2016 off Chad Bettis. After a week in which he practiced only once because of a left big toe injury. • Story's first career three-homer game was the 17th time a Colorado player has hit three in a game, last accomplished by Arenado on July 19, 2017, against the Padres. The game was close throughout, with Story snapping a tie with his third roundtripper. Starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela kept Colorado in it for five solid innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six.

On May 24, 2019, Story hit his 100th and 101st home runs, the 101st being a walk off to propel the Rockies to an 8–6 win over the Baltimore Orioles. He became the fastest shortstop to reach this mark, surpassing Alex Rodriguez, doing so in his 448th game. For the 2019 season, Story batted .294 with 35 home runs and 85 RBIs, and was again named to the All-Star team. Story was selected as one of the five choices for the All-Star Final Vote. On August 2, Story was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb.

On May 19, Story had three home runs and seven RBIs in a 12–6 win over the Mariners. On July 16, he was placed on the injured list due to a contusion to his right hand sustained on July 12 when he was hit by a pitch in a game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He remained on the injured list until being activated on August 27. Story returned to the injured list on September 22 due to a left heel contusion. In 94 games with Boston, Story batted .238 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Story's father, Ken, is a retired fireman and paramedic, and his mother, Teddie, was the chief executive officer of a local food pantry. His older brother, Tyler, played baseball at Irving and for the University of Texas at Austin. All-around, Story, at only 25-years old, is already one of the greatest Rockies players in the 25-year history of the organization. Again, he’s overshadowed by Arenado, but the Rockies star shortstop makes plenty of miraculous plays with his glove as well. With each of his three home runs helping the Rockies either tie the game or take the lead, and Colorado eventually coming away with a 5-3 win over the San Francisco Giants, Story was pleased with his night.

According to Statcast, Story’s 505-foot home run is the longest in the majors since Statcast began projecting home runs in the 2015 season. The third-longest home run in Coors Field — one that many contend is still the longest ever hit here — was a 496-foot moon shot by the Dodgers’ Mike Piazza on Sept. 26, 1997 off Darren Holmes, currently the Rockies’ bullpen coach.

Rockies’ Trevor Story hits 505-foot home run,…

Story advanced to the second round in front of the home crowd during All-Star Game festivities before being knocked out by eventual runner-up Trey Mancini. Story told me that it wasn’t so much about the swing that night (and the resulting follow-through), but rather the location of the pitch and everything coming together to produce the necessary power needed. I asked Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story about the unusual swing that led to a massive home run. One of Trevor Story’s longest home run as a member of the Colorado Rockies was a thing of beauty to watch leave the field. However, his swing and follow-through weren’t exactly how baseball instructors will draw it up for their pupils in future lessons.

"That's how you know he's hitting everything hard," Carlos Gonzalez said. "I was like, 'OK, my guy's feeling good today, so don't throw him strikes.' And he kept throwing him strikes. He took over and carried us tonight. It's always nice to see your teammate do something special." In his third at-bat of the night, Story sent another homer into the stands in the bottom of the sixth, making him the first Rockies shortstop ever to hit three HRs in one game. 2021 will be the second All-Star Game held at Coors, and it was the second Derby as well. Castilla, who finished his career with his third stint with the Rockies, serves the club as a special assistant to the general manager, and on Sunday managed the National League team in the Futures Game.

Matt Olson came up short in the Home Run Derby, but not as short as a fan who tried to catch one of his 23 homers. Colorado led San Francisco by one run in the bottom of the sixth after the shortstop's third solo home run. Story's second homer went 505 feet, the longest home run on record since Statcast began tracking in 2015. As he swung through two rounds of Monday night’s Home Run Derby -- beating the Rangers’ Joey Gallo, 20-19, in the first round before falling to the Orioles’ Trey Mancini, 13-12, in the second -- his gratitude outstripped any fatigue.

He committed to attend Louisiana State University on a college baseball scholarship. Without a doubt, Story is enjoying the best year of his three-year career. He was named an All-Star for the first time earlier this year, and his .295 batting average, 31 home runs, 95 RBI, 25 stolen bases and 74 runs scored are all career-highs.
